Man Utd call up latest academy prospect to Europa League squad amid defensive crisis

Manchester United will look to secure their place in the semi-finals of the Europa League on Thursday night in the second leg of their clash with Granada, having won 2-0 in Spain last week.

Manchester United have called up academy star Will Fish to their squad to face Granada in the Europa League on Thursday amid a defensive crisis.

The 18-year-old trained with the first-team on Tuesday after being promoted to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s European squad.

Young centre-half Fish is one of just three fit centre-halves in the squad to face Granada due to a number of injuries and suspensions.

Harry Maguire is one of three suspended players, while Eric Bailly not yet available after testing positive for Covid.

Phil Jones was also spotted back in training for the first time in months on Wednesday, and could be in contention, with Victor Lindelof and Axel Tuanzebe are expected to line up on the night.

Fish has risen through the youth ranks, captaining at U16 and U18 level prior to this season, when he has mainly represented the U23s.

Solskjaer is also likely to be without Marcus Rashford due to a foot injury, while Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay are also suspended.

And providing an update on his squad, the Norwegian admitted that it was less than ideal to have an number of absentees for such a vital clash, even with a two-goal advantage.

Marcus didn’t train this morning so I’ll have to give him as much time as possible,” Solskjaer said.

“His foot is still a little bit sore, but fingers crossed he is available tomorrow.

“Dan James is back. He trained this morning so he should be available.

“Of course, we’ve lost a few through suspension for this game against Granada.”

“It’s never a positive thing to not have every player available but we’ve got players ready to deputise and come into the team of course.

“It was amnesty [on yellow cards previously picked up] after this quarter-final so we hoped to get them through but it was some easy yellow cards, should we say, that the referee handed out.”

Anthony Elanga was on the bench for the win in Granada last week having been added to the squad just days before, and could make his debut on Thursday night.
