The Police Command in Ondo State has warned residents to shun the planned ‘Take it Back Movement’ protest scheduled for Monday in the state.

This was contained in a statement signed and made available to newsmen on Monday in Akure by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Ayanlade Olushola.

Olushola, who said that the command acknowledged the constitutional rights of all citizens to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, said the warning was due to the credible intelligence received regarding a planned protest.

He said, “The effort of the command is to stabilise the security situation across the state, and we are concerned that such a gathering could be hijacked by unscrupulous elements.

“This could lead to a breakdown of law and order, thus rolling back the security gains we have collectively achieved in Ondo State.

“We, therefore, urge the leadership of the ‘Take It Back Movement’, their supporters, and other interest groups to embrace constructive dialogue as a means of addressing grievances.

“If they take to the streets in such a manner, it may heighten tensions and heat up the polity.”

Olushola explained that the state Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, had directed all area commanders, tactical team commanders, and Divisional Police Officers to intensify the deployment of personnel.

The PPRO said Afolabi also directed the deployment of operational assets to all identified public spaces and critical infrastructure to forestall any breakdown of law and order.

According to him, the command reassures the good people of Ondo State of its unwavering commitment to safeguard their fundamental rights and freedom.

He, therefore, called on parents and guardians to dissuade their wards from engaging in acts that could disrupt the peace and stability currently enjoyed in the state.

“The general public is hereby encouraged to go about their lawful business without fear, as adequate security measures have been put in place to guarantee the safety and protection of all citizens.

“Also, the command urges residents to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or any other security agency nearest to them,” he said.

About 20 states across Nigeria have yet to implement the N70,000 minimum wage for local government workers and primary school teachers, according to the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE).

The National President of NULGE, Alhaji Haruna Kankara, listed states such as Yobe, Gombe, Zamfara, Kaduna, Imo, Ebonyi, Cross River, Borno, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), among others, as being non-compliant with the wage law.

Following the signing of the Minimum Wage Act, 2024 by President Bola Tinubu on July 29, 2024, several states began implementation. These include Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Niger, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Jigawa, Gombe, Ogun, Kebbi, Ondo, and Kogi.

The Act increased the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000 — a 133 percent rise — as a measure to cushion economic hardship.

Speaking on the situation, Alhaji Kankara said, “We are facing challenges in about 20 states. Some have begun paying state-level workers but excluded local government workers and primary school teachers. Despite assurances from some state governments, implementation remains incomplete. We are continuing our advocacy.”

He also highlighted ongoing issues with the implementation of local government autonomy, stating that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has yet to direct local councils to open independent bank accounts, a step seen as vital for financial autonomy.

In Kwara State, local government workers have received the new minimum wage since October 2024. However, heavy taxation has significantly reduced take-home pay.

“The government approved the minimum wage but imposed steep taxes. After appeals, workers received only a three-month tax relief, which ended in December. Deductions resumed in January,” said Seun Oyinlade, the state NULGE president.

Confirming this, NLC State Chairman Muritala Olayinka said the union has written to the state governor requesting an extension of the tax holiday.

The Blues manager was also asked about the situation of two of his senior players. Enzo Fernandez was superb for Argentina during the international break and Maresca admits he can see a change in approach from the midfielder.

He explained, “Enzo, I said already, he has been improving a lot, understanding the game much, much better. At the beginning, he struggled a bit but he is always in the right position now and that is why he is scoring and assisting. Even for the international team, he arrived in the box.”

Maresca also commented on transfer talk of Chelsea passing on the prospect of signing permanently on-loan Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho.

He continued: “I love all the players with us. In this moment, it is to finish well and not think about next season. What happens in the summer, we will see. I am happy with all the players here.

President Donald Trump has once again suggested seeking a third term in office, telling NBC News on Sunday that he is “not joking” about the possibility.

“There are methods which you could do it,” Trump said in a Sunday morning phone interview, adding that “a lot of people” want him to run again.

While he acknowledged that it was “far too early to think about it,” he suggested that plans had already been presented to him that could make it possible.

The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution limits presidents to two terms, making Trump’s claim legally improbable without a constitutional change.

Amending the Constitution would require a two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate or the support of two-thirds of the country’s state legislatures to call a constitutional convention-both highly unlikely scenarios given the current political landscape.

However, Trump hinted at alternative methods. When asked if Vice President JD Vance could run for president and then step down, allowing Trump to take over, he acknowledged it as “one” possible path but declined to elaborate on others.

The idea of extending Trump’s presidency has gained traction in some Republican circles. In January, Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) introduced a resolution to amend the Constitution to allow presidents to serve up to three terms, though such a proposal faces steep hurdles.

A source close to the situation told SaharaReporters on Monday that confusion and concern are mounting among APC leaders in Lagos over Obasa’s refusal to withdraw the suit.

The source further expressed frustration over the situation, highlighting that Meranda had already accepted the party’s resolution and stepped aside.

If you know Meranda very well, you will see that she is an easygoing person, not someone who wants the speakership ‘do or die.’ Since the leaders told her to step down in the interest of the party, she relinquished her ambition and did not pursue it further. This is why we don’t know what Obasa wants from the court again. But everyone is observing the situation,” the source added.

Obasa’s counsel, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), has, however, dismissed speculations that his client is considering withdrawing the case.

Speaking to The PUNCH on Sunday, Fashanu confirmed that his team is awaiting judgment from the Lagos State High Court, where the case is being heard.

“We are just waiting for the judgment. We don’t know when yet; the court said they will communicate it to us,” Fashanu stated.

When pressed on whether Obasa was reconsidering his decision, Fashanu responded firmly: “We have concluded. You’re twisting the hand of the clock back. We have concluded arguments; that one does not arise again. He’s not withdrawing, we have concluded.”

This stance contradicts expectations following Tinubu’s intervention, which was widely believed to have resolved the impasse and facilitated Obasa’s return as Speaker.

Despite Obasa’s legal team’s insistence, Otunba Henry Ajomale, former chairman of the Lagos APC and a member of the party’s influential Governance Advisory Council (GAC), expressed confidence that the lawsuit would soon be dropped.

“Very soon, (at) the next sitting, you will see the difference,” Ajomale told journalists during an event in Lagos over the weekend.

“Somebody is aggrieved, and he went to court. It is his right to go to court. And it is now our own duty, since Mr. President intervened and rightly too because this is his own making,” he said.

“He will not allow it to create a bitter problem. And that is why he had to intervene. Everything is back to normal now.”

Ajomale assured that now that Obasa has been reinstated as Speaker, the lawsuit would be withdrawn promptly.

“Perhaps at the next sitting, you will see the difference,” he added.

Obasa’s legal battle stems from the leadership crisis that led to his ouster on January 13, 2025, paving the way for Meranda to become the first female Speaker of the House.

However, his removal triggered intense political manoeuvring, and after 49 days, he was reinstated following the intervention of APC’s national leadership and President Tinubu.

The 40 lawmakers met with Tinubu in Abuja on March 12, where he reportedly brokered peace between Obasa and Meranda. Yet, the Assembly has remained inactive, failing to reconvene since March 3, which has raised concerns over a legislative standstill in Lagos.

The petition was accepted on Monday by INEC Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony.

On March 21, 2025, a Federal High Court in Lokoja ruled in favour of an interim injunction blocking INEC from accepting the recall petition due to allegations of falsified signatures.

The ruling was delivered by Justice Isa H. Dashen in suit number FHC/LKJ/CS/13/2025.

The court order restrained INEC from “receiving, accepting, or acting in any way whatsoever on any purported petitions submitted to the defendant by any person or persons whatsoever, containing fictitious signatures and names of purported members of Kogi Central Senatorial District and conducting any referendum whatsoever upon such petition for the purpose of initiating a recall process.”

The case is scheduled for a hearing on May 6, 2025.

Residents have accused them of deceiving voters into signing recall documents under the guise of an empowerment program.

She further alleged that the recall effort lacked public support.

“People started leaving. I see it as a fraud, and they are doing something the people do not support. I myself do not support it, and the majority of people in this local government are against it.”

During an interview with Arise News Television on Sunday, Nwibubasa accused Wike of failing to uphold his commitments, particularly regarding his stance on suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Nwibubasa recalled that Wike had previously vowed not to interfere with Fubara’s administration and had pledged loyalty to the PDP. However, he believes that Wike has since reneged on these promises, which he deems a substantial breach of trust.

Data from the Refugee Protection Division (RPD) of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB), Nigeria ranks among the top five countries with the highest number of rejected claims, placing 5th, Sunday PUNCH reports.

Other countries with high rejection rates include Mexico, with 2,954 rejections, India (1,688), Haiti (982), and Colombia (723).

The IRB grants refugee protection if the RPD determines that an applicant meets the United Nations definition of a Convention refugee, “which has been incorporated into Canadian law, or that the applicant is a person in need of protection.”

The 1951 UN Convention relating to the Status of Refugees defines refugees as individuals with a well-founded fear of persecution due to their race, nationality, religion, political beliefs, or membership in a particular social group. These social groups can include sexual orientation, gender identity, being a woman, and individuals living with HIV/AIDS.

Applicants seeking protection must also provide evidence of the risk of torture, threats to their life, or the possibility of cruel and unusual treatment or punishment if they are forced to return to their home country.

Protection claims are typically made when immigrants notify the Border Services Agency upon arrival at any Canadian port of entry or report to an immigration officer.

“The officer decides whether the claim is eligible to be referred to the IRB. If the claim is eligible, it is sent (‘referred’) to the RPD to start the claim for refugee protection process,” according to an application guideline by the Refugee Board.

During the period under review, 94 claims from Nigerian passport holders were abandoned. The RPD explained that a claim may be abandoned if “the completed Basis of Claim Form was not provided on time, the claimant’s current and correct contact information was not provided, or the claimant did not attend their refugee protection claim hearing or the special hearing on the abandonment of the claim (if required).”

Additionally, 78 claims were withdrawn, representing cases where “the claimant does not continue with their claim,” while 19,889 claims were still pending.

A breakdown of the rejections since 2013 shows that 127, 241, and 248 Nigerians were denied refugee protection in 2013, 2014, and 2015, respectively, under the new system for determining refugee protection claims, which took effect on December 15, 2012.

Rejections rose to 476 in 2016, 917 in 2017, and 1,777 in 2018. In 2019, the highest number of Nigerian claims were denied, with 3,951 applicants rejected. The figures dropped to 1,770 in 2020, 1,686 in 2021, 728 in 2022, 439 in 2023, and 811 in 2024.

Despite the high rejection rates, 10,580 Nigerians were granted refugee status over the past decade, including at least 2,230 successful claims from January to December 2024.

Nigeria also ranked among the top 10 countries with the highest number of accepted claims, placing 8th. Other countries on the list include Turkiye (4,866), Mexico (4,363), Colombia (3,340), Iran (3,200), Pakistan (2,556), Haiti (2,211), Afghanistan (1,921), and Kenya (1,653).

Acceptance figures for Nigerians include fewer than 20 in 2013, 308 in 2014, 394 in 2015, and 389 in 2016. The numbers increased to 764 in 2017, 755 in 2018, and 1,733 in 2019. In 2020, 1,534 claims were approved, followed by 2,302 in 2021, 1,315 in 2022, and 2,230 in 2024.

The Police Command in Lagos State has detained a 22-year-old member of an armed robbery syndicate specialising in car theft.

In a statement released on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said that the suspect was apprehended in the Ikotun area of the state through intelligence gathering.

“The syndicate targets vehicles in the Eastern part of Nigeria and transports their victims’ cars to Lagos and sell them. During interrogation, he confessed to receiving three Lexus 330 and one Lexus 350 2017 model from an accomplice, a woman, who is still at large,” Hundeyin said

The police image maker said that the suspect led a team of operatives to where he sold the cars.

“One Lexus 350 silver in color and a Lexus 330 black in color were recovered,” he said.

Hundeyin added that efforts were being made to apprehend other fleeing members of the syndicate and possible recovery of all the stolen vehicles.
