Lagos Police Launch Inquiry Into Claims That Ride-Hailing Driver Set Up Robbery Attacks

The Lagos state police command has launched an investigation into a viral tweet from a lady accusing a hailing-app driver of staging a robbery attack on his passengers.

In a post on social media, @Big-Itohan shared a screenshot showing the bio of a driver and called on people to avoid him. She alleged that the driver sets passengers up with claims of his vehicle developing mechanical fault after which he parks for other members of his gang to come and attack the unsuspecting passenger.

Reacting to the post, the spokesperson of the command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, via her X handle, said the command has invited the later and accused driver for questioning.

In a now viral audio, a man said to be the accused driver dismissed the accusation. He said contrary to Itohan’s claim, he was not involved in any robbery.

He said during her trip with him, his car broke down and the situation got the attention of area boys who came around and demanded some money from him. He said it was the lady who then bargained with them and even transferred N5000 to them.

‘’It’s fake news. I didn’t plan to rob anybody. My car broke down and those area boys came. They came to me asking for money and I said I didn’t have money. The next thing, that lady asked them ‘’How much’?’. That was how they turned to her. They didn’t stab her. They didn’t do anything. They started discussing that I will give you ‘so and so’ amount. At the end of the day, she transferred N5000 to those area boys. They didn’t beat anyone.

My car broke down. Within 20 minutes I fixed the car. It was on Sunday night. It was when the car started working they said they wanted to collect money before I leave. She is the one that transferred money to them. I don’t know where they came from”
