Nigeria’s Independence: A Reflection on Progress, Challenges, and the Path Forward by Comr Adedoyin Olakunle Stephen
As Nigeria celebrates its 63rd Independence Day, it is a moment of both remembrance and contemplation. The struggle for independence, which seems like it was just yesterday, was marked by the heroic sacrifices of individuals who believed in the dream of a free and sovereign Nigeria.
However, as we reflect on our journey since then, it becomes apparent that the concept of independence is multifaceted. True independence encompasses not only political freedom but also liberty for the citizens. It involves the absence of undue constraints on the choices and aspirations of every individual, regardless of their background.
Yet, in our quest for progress, we must acknowledge that we face challenges that threaten the very essence of our independence. We see instances where one’s parentage or connections seem to dictate their opportunities and success more than their merit. The specters of police brutality, selfish politicians, and the privatization of public assets loom large, casting a shadow on our nation.
In this climate, we must ask ourselves whether we risk losing our hard-earned independence once again. Who among us has a compelling reason to fight for a Nigeria held hostage by these issues? Can we truly claim to be independent when a significant portion of our population lives in despair and agony?
Our youth, the hope of the nation, find themselves disheartened, and emigration has become a pervasive trend. Talented and vibrant young Nigerians seek opportunities elsewhere, disillusioned by the challenges they face at home. It begs the question: Are we genuinely free? Are we truly independent?
In light of these concerns, it is incumbent upon us, as proud Nigerians, to look inward and rebuild our nation from the grassroots. We possess the abundant resources and potential to transform Nigeria into the nation we envision and desire—a united, prosperous, and free country.
I am Adedoyin Olakunle Stephen, an advocate for progress and unity in the South West of Nigeria. As we mark this Independence Day, let us remember that our collective efforts can make Nigeria a dream fulfilled and a source of pride for all its citizens.
Happy Independence Day, Nigeria. May our shared aspirations lead us toward a brighter future.
