Nuno Tavares was announced as Arsenal’s first signing of the summer, joining the Gunners for £7million from Portuguese giants Benfica, a shrewd piece of business from chief executive Edu Gaspar who identified the youngster as an ideal candidate to offer backup and competition to Kieran Tierney left-back.
The 21-year-old made 41 appearances for Benfica, including featuring against the north London side in last season’s Europa League defeat and will join Mikel Arteta’s side as Tierney’s deputy ahead of next season.
The young defender will wear the No.20 for Arsenal, which was previously worn by German international Shkodran Mustafi.
The Gunners have made the Portuguese left back their first acquisition of the summer.
It is that price tag as well as many other factors that means Tavares ticks the boxes of the profile of left back the Gunners were interested in this summer.
As someone who has only made 41 senior appearances in his club career so far the Portuguese defender would be willing to be understudy to Tierney.
