Osun: Adeleke orders probe after killing of US-based lecturer
A Nigerian lecturer and prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Richard Idowu, was fatally shot in the Ejigbo area of Osun State. The incident occurred during a meeting held at the residence of Prince Eniola Oyeyode, the son of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Omowonuola Oyeyode, who was celebrating his 50th anniversary on the throne. The meeting involved political figures, including a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Ayodele Asalu.
After the meeting concluded, gunshots were heard as the attendees were leaving, resulting in Idowu being hit in the leg. He succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Ejigbo. The incident has caused tension and mourning in the community.
A Personal Assistant to the deceased, Afiz Lawal, who was present at the scene, described the unfortunate incident, stating that the shooting may have been accidental, but the circumstances remain unclear. It was reported that the individual responsible for the gunshot was allegedly beaten to death.
Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident and its aftermath, directing law enforcement agencies to determine the causes and ensure that justice is served. The governor also called for preventive measures to avoid further violence in the town.
The spokesperson for the state police command, Yemisi Opalola, could not be reached for comment at the time of reporting. The Governor has dispatched a delegation, including the Commissioner of Police, to Ejigbo to restore calm and oversee the investigation. Governor Adeleke expressed condolences to the families affected and emphasized the need for guidelines on the use of local guns to enhance public safety at events.
