Fiam! That was the sound of cane on my back
Lo ka iwe e seh (Go and read your book nah)
Shey I should not lie eh, I used to be a good student but can’t really remember sitting down with my book to read. At a point my academic performance reduced to average and then from average to “below average”. After trying to read well and all it improved but then not above average.I was just tired of reading ni jare.
Then my grand father called me and spoke with me… He said ” Do you know that reading book can be as delicious as honey?”
I nodded but let’s not deceive ourselves in my mind I was like “Kanikpe this is not my grandpa ni the kind of facial expression I would have given him lasan”. So he said, whenever you want to read think of it like eating because you are actually feeding your eyes and your brain which will in turn result a great outcome”
I still wasn’t following but then he said
“Let me share a secret with you, anytime you want to read, pour some honey into your palm, carry your book, lick some honey, read for a while, pause to lick some and read again”
“Doing this helps to program your mind to a certain way and makes it believe the reading exercise is the same as eating”
I started sha but oh boy, I finished the honey before getting to anywhere and lost interest again but then I decided to try another day, this time around I was determined that ahh this book I will see the end of you….. So I pour some honey, started reading and it started to look interesting to me.
To cut the long story short
How many of you have noticed that listening to stories while eating usually sounds more interesting? At that moment you are currently feeding your stomach, ears, brain so they are all in rhythm. Today the idea of reading alone feels like food to me, like it excites me a whole lot.
So that’s my secret of honey
Ps: These things takes time and intentionality to build but your determination to see it work will actually make the process easier and fun for you
