SM HEALTH: Anxiety? How to overcome it


There was this certain day I wanted the ground to just open up and swallow me up!

If anxiety were a person it was definitely me on that day.

I could feel myself gasping, the wheather was cool but I could still feel beads of sweat dropping down my face. It wasn’t a pleasant experience. You must be wondering what could have led to the anxiety? ………. To be continued


Dear reader, we tend to feel anxiety on cases we don’t have control over, we worry over and over again on those matters and it becomes so overwhelming to the extent that it causes shortness of breath. I call this Anxiety Disorder, you see it’s normal to feel anxiety once in a while especially in cases like; change of environment, first day at school, about to do a project defense e.t.c

It’s normal to feel anxiety but the moment it becomes intense, it disturbs your daily activities and relationships. This disorder can also alter how a person processes emotions and behaves.

Symptoms of Anxiety

  • Uncontrollable feeling of worry
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sleep problem
  • Feelings of panic, doom or danger
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Inability to stay calm


Practical ways to overcome Anxiety

1. Futuristic Thinking:

Whenever you are faced with a situation that makes you feel anxiety, ask yourself this question

What would I be do after scaling through this?

For example; Let’s say you have a project to defense, having preparing adequately for the defense think on what you would like to do, a treat or reward yourself at the end of that project defense. This helps calm your nerves and helps you more concentrated the positive parts.

2. Get together with friends!

Our definition of friendship might vary but getting together with friends care about you and wants the best you is like medicine. I tell one of the easiest ways to ease anxiety for me is talking to my close circle of friends. Phew! It’s one of the best I assure you.

3. Keep a journal:

Writing down your thoughts is an effective way of easing the tension. It’s also a way of keeping your thoughts together and expressing yourself better. Sometimes explaining yourself to people might make you feel they won’t understand how you feel, writing down your thoughts is a way to relief yourself off the emotional stress of feeling that way.

4. Seek Support:

Feeling Anxiety to the extreme shouldn’t be something you tackle all by yourself, seek help. Talk to someone mature and who has understanding, don’t keep it to yourself. Keeping it to yourself is the easiest way to make it to lead to depression….
