U.S. President Donald Trump has strongly criticized billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk for launching a new political party, calling the move “ridiculous” and warning it would only cause confusion in the American political system.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, July 6, before boarding Air Force One, President Trump dismissed Musk’s decision to form an alternative party outside the traditional Republican and Democratic lines.

“I think it’s ridiculous to start a third party,” Trump said. “It’s always been a two-party system, and I think starting a third party just adds to the confusion.”

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO recently announced the formation of the political group in the wake of his increasingly public feud with Trump. Musk has positioned the party as a challenge to what he calls the Republican-Democratic “Uniparty”  a term used to criticize perceived bipartisan failures.

On his social media platform, Truth Social, President Trump expanded on his views and took aim directly at Musk’s recent behavior and political aspirations.

“I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks,” Trump posted. “He even wants to start a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States.”

Trump argued that the emergence of a third political party historically results in chaos rather than progress.

“The one thing Third Parties are good for is the creation of Complete and Total DISRUPTION & CHAOS,” Trump continued.

He went further, accusing Musk of being motivated not by patriotism or reform, but by personal frustration with Trump’s decision to end federal subsidies supporting the purchase of electric vehicles  a policy that directly affects Musk’s business interests.

Trump also alleged that Musk had tried to gain undue influence by lobbying him to appoint his associate Jared Isaacman as the NASA Administrator. Isaacman is a close friend of Musk and involved in the private space industry.

“I also thought it inappropriate that a very close friend of Elon, who was in the Space Business, run NASA, when NASA is such a big part of Elon’s corporate life,” Trump said.

He noted that once Musk stepped down from his role as a special government employee in Trump’s administration, Isaacman’s nomination was subsequently withdrawn.

In response to Musk’s new political movement, Trump scoffed at its chances of success.

“Third parties have never worked, so he can have fun with it,” Trump remarked.

It’s worth recalling that Musk previously played a key role in supporting Trump’s administration, spending hundreds of millions to back Trump’s re-election campaign. He also served as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)  a now-defunct unit designed to reduce federal spending and improve operations.

Musk reportedly began reviving the idea of forming a new political party last week, coinciding with congressional approval of Trump’s sweeping new tax and spending bill. Their disagreement has since escalated, marking a sharp and very public break between two formerly close allies.
