“Uncertainty Lingers as NMA Panel Delays Conclusion on Nnamdi Kanu’s Health Assessment”
The medical panel established by the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to evaluate the health condition of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has not yet completed its work.
The panel was constituted following a court order issued by Justice James Omotosho on September 26, directing the NMA President to appoint a team of medical experts to assess whether Kanu is fit to continue his ongoing terrorism trial.
During the court session on Wednesday, October 8, the prosecution counsel, Suraj Sa’ada (SAN), informed the court that the panel was still carrying out its assignment and had requested additional time to ensure a comprehensive and professional evaluation. Sa’ada said the panel was “doing a thorough job” and asked that it be granted an extra week to complete the medical assessment.
The defence counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), did not oppose the prosecution’s request for more time.
Consequently, Justice Omotosho adjourned the case until October 16, giving the NMA panel one more week to finalize its report before the trial resumes.
The examination of Kanu’s health is a critical part of the ongoing legal proceedings, as the court seeks to determine whether his medical condition allows him to continue standing trial on charges related to terrorism and separatist activities.
